The “Effort and Social Inequality” ECSR Thematic Conference took place in Madrid on the 14th to the 16th of June, 2023, organised by the Carlos III-Juan March Institute of Social Sciences. Proceedings were held in the Puerta de Toledo campus of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.

Featured session on the results of the EFFORT project. This session featured presentations on five different papers based on data from the EFFORT project.
Session 1 on “Family and education”. This session featured presentations on the theme of family and education.
Session 2 on “Meritocracy and redistribution“. This session featured presentations on the theme of meritocracy and redistribution.
Kaspar Burger’s keynote. Kaspar Burger delivered a keynote on the theme “A life course perspective on educational inequalities: Revisiting the structure/agency debate.”
Jennifer Sheehy-Skeffington’s keynote. Jennifer Sheehy-Skeffington delivered a keynote on the theme “A socio-ecological perspective on decision-making in low-income contexts”.
Lessons learned and future research. Heike Solga led the round table discussion, featuring Luis Miller and Jan Stuhler on lessons learned from the conference proceedings, and potential directions for future research.

Kaspar Burger
Kaspar is an SNSF Eccellenza Professor at the Institute of Sociology in the University of Zurich.
He delivered a keynote on the theme “A life course perspective on educational inequalities: Revisiting the structure/agency debate.”
Jennifer Sheehy-Skeffington
Jennifer is Associate Professor at the Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science in the London School of Economics and Political Science.
She gave a keynote on the theme “A socio-ecological perspective on decision-making in low-income contexts”.
Heike Solga
Heike is Professor of Sociology at the Free University Berlin and Director of the Research Unit “Skill Formation and Labor Markets” at WZB Berlin Social Science Center.
She gave the openening remarks for the input session on “Lessons learned and future research.”
